Way of the ostrich..

Read on to identify the ostriches around you. You too may be one..

Being an ostrich is not necessarily a bad thing. But whether it is a compliment or an insult depends on what characteristic of an ostrich you have knowingly or unknowingly adopted. For starters, it boasts of being the largest bird, almost as much as two adult human beings. They have eyes that are largest of any land vertebrate, so they can see any predators from far far away. Their speed is so fast that they can cover 3-5 meters in a single stride. And the list goes on.

Despite so many of these favorable, enviable traits, some people decide to run away from facts and problems when their existing thought process is threatened, just like an ostrich. Also, just like the ostrich gets highly aggressive when cornered, there are some people who decide to act aggressively when their own thought process is threatened. This is irrespective of the consideration by them, that they are wrong.

Does turning your head away from reality change the facts? A fact is fact, irrespective of whether you believe it or not. When presented by fact, the job of a human being is to use the brain they have, by human advantage over all other species, to analyze the fact by operating on the assumption that they may be wrong, and finally accepting the fact if you are wrong. But owing to the judgement capabilities “endowed” to them, they get it all wrong.

The first and foremost step to open your mind to the possibility of accepting facts from others is to realize that being older doesn’t make you wiser, and being younger doesn’t make you inexperienced. A young nurse has much much more knowledge and experience on helping people in need than you may ever have in life. Your younger sibling may have a higher power of comprehension than you. It is all about identification and understanding.

The primary reason people run away from reality is based on social acceptance. The fear of going against popular opinion and the distress of being answerable to society forces people to tweak their own comprehension to match that of the average opinions. While it surely gets you out of some sticky situations in public, it definitely does not make you any wiser in your own individual eyes.

So whether you want to be an ostrich running away from reality, or a human evaluating reality, is completely within your cognizance and power of grasp.
